How is it possible for the Church to transform society when society rejects the Gospel, classifying it as hate crime? It can’t. Yet to listen to the claims of many post modern Christians, we are about to experience a massive outpouring of Holy Spirit power which will lead to whole communities turning away from crime and being delivered from social ills. Will it be in spite of local authority noise abatement measures, complaints from the local Mosque, and intimidation by the Homosexual community? Apparently so.
Of course God could pour out His Spirit despite all of these opposing factors, and in many cases, persecution has led to the more rapid spread of Christianity than in times of peace. This is a different scenario altogether because the Gospel that is supposed to transform our society, is really no Gospel at all. It has all of the outward appearances of the traditional Gospel. Music, Bible study etc. In essence, there is more of a focus on international humanitarianism, than the work of real discipleship, work which has to be done for there to be any real transformation. Those post modernists who preach revival, offer no more than a compromised church with a “religious” experience thrown in.
This scenario has the same ingredients as the modern “revivals”. It has led to a cheapening of the true work of Holy Spirit grace, a hollow and inefficient gospel message preached by many who would be more suited to a career in motivation or corporate management.
The remarkable thing is, that society IS being transformed but it is due to something entirely different, a common consensus based upon the principles of this world and it’s ruler. Even more remarkable is that the true Church is impacting upon its environment, not through showtime church services, but through the old rugged cross, just as Jesus did.
It is a sign of Gods judgement upon our country that we might so easily be led astray.
“Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.” Matt 11:21
