“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.” 1Jn 2:15-17
We are said to live in an “Information age” but precisely what the information consists of is a matter of debate.
The “Creel Commission” established in the U.S. under the Woodrow Wilson administration in 1917,, used every method of media manipulation possible to influence American public opinion with the result that, during the course of world war 1, the American population had been transformed from generally pacifistic, to hysterical war-mongers, baying for the blood of Germans who had been portrayed as murderous barbarians in the media. The same media control was used later to promote fear and panic over the threat of a communist takeover. Under the direction of experts in psychology such as Edward Bernays, propaganda has been highly effective in what is called by Bernays, “The Engineering of Consent.” It remains just as effective today.
The problem we encounter in trying to understand the world as presented to us through the media is our sense of isolation. We may feel a certain way about a particular topic but most of us have no way of knowing if we are alone in our views, or if there are hundreds or thousands of like minded citizens out there. Since most of us dont have the means to find out what others think, we tend to accept what we are told.
The Bible clearly informs us that the world is ruled over by the “Evil one” (Jn 12:31). We should be aware that the kind of information we are allowing into our lives via popular media channels, can have a detrimental effect on our perception of reality and can lead us into a dangerous compromise with the truth.
You’re not alone, the Bible says (Heb 13:5). You are joined with bonds of love to the Body of Christ (Col 3:14-15). The reality of the physical presence of Christ’s Body on earth is powerful. It is through these bonds that the truest expression of Gods Kingdom is to be found and God’s kingdom will continue to grow in love, with all things held together in Jesus Christ.(Col 1:17)
