Over the past few years there has been a remarkable increase in popularity of ancient Catholic spirituality within Non-Catholic denominations.
Despite ringing endorsements of these Mystical practices by many well respected Church leaders, the techniques of Lectio Divina, Stillness, Breath control and the use of Labyrinths, are not only extra-biblical, but spiritually dangerous.
Just to clarify our approach, there is a distinction between attempting to know God through the use of mysticism, and knowing God who, by the very nature of things, is mysterious to man’s limited understanding.
Mysticism of the Christian variety is defined as “a system of contemplative prayer and spirituality aimed at achieving direct intuitive experience of the divine”(Source: Free online dictionary) It is a system whereby one enters into a state of altered consciousness in order to better commune with God.
The big question here is WHY we feel the need to perform mystical rituals to enter into deeper communion with God, when Jesus plainly stated that we only have to ASK Him to come into our lives.
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” Matt 7:7&8 (KJV)
Moreover, in Verses 13 and 14 of the same Chapter, Jesus goes on to say,
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad isthe way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
The command of Jesus, that we are simply to come to Him is completely unambiguous. There are no tricks or rituals necessary. The “Strait Gate” is Jesus himself. Through Him alone we MUST enter if we are to experience the presence of God.
Jesus even goes on to say that those who attempt to enter the Kingdom of Heaven through any other means are “thieves” and “robbers”.
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” John 10:1
The unhappy truth is that the Church at large is increasingly abandoning sound doctrine and the Jesus of the Bible is being replaced by another “Jesus.” That is to say, Jesus is misrepresented as (most commonly) The Son of God who loves us and died for us, but who requests only a superficial following by those who claim to be His disciples. Of course such a view of Jesus CANNOT be endorsed by the Holy Spirit so that the “religious experience” of the Mystic, is so often mistaken for the true anointing of the Holy Spirit, but Mystics of every persuasion have the same religious ecstasy, from Sufi Muslims to Buddhists, to Village Shamans. There is NO Biblical mandate for these practices and the very real danger of this delusion is that we do not have the council of the Holy Spirit, convicting us of sin and acting as guide and compass through our spiritual life.
Jesus said,
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me.” Jn 16:4
Consider carefully, that “The Way”, of Jesus is the way of sacrifice, denial to selfish ambition and a life lived, worthy of His calling. A life of Holiness and obedience to the Holy Spirit.
